Tips About Developing Alliances at Work

Tips About Developing Alliances at WorkTips About Developing Alliances at WorkWhy do you work? You work for money and benefits, of course. But, once you are making an adequate living and your basic needs are met, most people work for other reasons, too. Surveys of employed people demonstrate that people want achallenge in their work. They want appreciation from people they hold in esteem. They want the boss to notice when they do mora than is expected. But, most of all, people want to accomplish their own personal work mission. Whether that mission is to transform your organizations approach to quality or to introduce a wertzuwachs management system that will help you develop a superior workforce, you need allies at work. No matter how important, reasonable or potentially helpful your mission is, you are unlikely to accomplish it without help. And, thats why you need alliances at work. Benefits of Having an Ally An ally is an associate who provides assistance and often, friendshi p. Your allies are likely to hilfestellung your views and causes. They help solve problems, provide advice, act as a sounding board when you need a listening ear and offer a different perspective so you can view your organization more broadly. 10 Tips on How to Build Alliances Alliances can operate for good and they can also be conducted for less than positive reasons. In providing this information, I am making the assumption that you have the best interests of your organization and coworkers at heart. With this in mind, here are ten tips that will help you develop work alliances that will help you accomplish your work mission. Effective communication forms the foundation for a positive work alliance. You need to be able to tell your potential ally what you need and listen deeply to what they need. Open lines of communication keep information, opinions, and support flowing. Put yourself in your allys shoes and respect their point of view that may be different from your own.Treat your allies as equals. No matter their position within your organization, all people are equal they just have different jobs. Believe this. Act as if you believe this every single day. You will attract strong and successful alliances. Exhibit total professionalism. Never participate in gossip or in discussing the business of coworkers behind their backs. People will trust you and know that what they tell you is safe in your hands. Alliances only work when trust is present.Spend time with your allies. Be available to listen, to strategize and to occasionally eat lunch together. Make sure you are not forming an exclusive club that the rest of your organization will fear and resent. But, you must take the time to develop strong relationships with your allies. When working on a project together, always put forth your best efforts. Be the person who is willing to do extra to strengthen the collaboration and the outcome or product. Produce work that allies are proud to support.Choose you r battles wisely. A colleague gave in to another coworker recently on a staffing decision. When I inquired why he let the other persons opinion prevail, he responded that he needed the colleagues support on much more important issues. Give in to the little decisions, or the decisions that appear to be much more important to the coworker. Youll more easily gain support for the decisions that are important to you. Keep your promises. If you say you will do something, do it. People need to dependon you and the deadlines to which you commit. Again, it is a matter of developing trust.Resolve any conflicts or disputes at your earliest opportunity. Unresolved conflict festers just under the surface in organizations. Unresolved conflict undermines alliance-building and mutual, purposeful progress toward accomplishing personal and organizational missions.Be an ally. Support your colleagues ability to accomplish his or her mission, too. Give credit for ideas and solutions. Publicly express su pport for your allys desired direction. Assuming you actually do support an idea (no fabrication allowed), be among the first to verbally support the idea. Dont wait until you see in which direction the rest of the group is heading. Demonstrate professional courage and speak up early. I had the opportunity to support the opening of a facility in a different state recently. The numbers worked to my companys advantage and my colleague appreciated my early and verbal support. Finally, never back-stab or blind-side an ally. If you have a problem with their actions, talk to your ally directly. Dont talk to their boss or your boss because if that is the first person your ally hears from about a problem, you have blown the most fundamental understanding of an alliance. If you let your ally down, you could spend years redeveloping the relationship, if trust at the prior level is ever again even possible. Alliance-building is a delicate process that can easily go astray. Alliance-building ta kes time, effort, commitment and sometimes not getting what you want. But, if you want to accomplish your personal work mission, assuming that your mission is positive and congruent with your organizations mission, you must have allies at work.

Technology Is the Future of Construction

Technology Is the Future of Construction Technology Is the Future of Construction Technology Is the Future of ConstructionThanks to improved technologies, mechanical engineering in construction has found itself more efficient and, at the planning stage, cheaper. Richard Beattie, a mechanical engineer and president of MEC in Baltimore, MD, says the industry is moving toward BIMbuilding information modelinga collaborative design between the architect structure which allows designing in 4D. You identify conflicts on the same documents so we can work collaboratively, allowing people in the field to binnensee the building, he says. You see everything in 2D when you look at drawingsits in the plan view, like looking at the floor plan of your house. Thats how construction has been done for 100 years but you cant see depth so when you have confined space you dont know if something designed would hit the sprinkler, pipe or HVAC duct. Previously, you had to wait for the architect of the drawin g then have a structural person see how the floor would be. That kind of coordination doesnt happen at the design level but has to happen at the field level and causes delays and overruns, Beattie says. We say that if you put something on a drawing you have a 50% chance of getting it installed, Beattie laughs. But if you can show it in 3D you can get it up to 8090%. Students from The Pennsylvania State University won an award for this BIM rendering.Another major technology is variable refrigerant volume. It operates water sources such as a heat pump but doesnt use water directly. Magnetic bearing chillers are also leading the way, Beattie says. Instead of using bearings to allow shafts to rotate inside of refrigeration equipment, it uses magnets that cause impellers to float, Beattie explains. Allowing for zero friction, it is expensive technology but efficient. Certification Issues Beattie says one of the biggest issues is pushing green technology and LEED certification for buildin gs. In doing that, owners are looking for more accurate models. It means we develop computer models to predict performance of the building for electricity usage and gas usage, Beattie says. You can spend a year working on the models. But so many variables can predict the difference between two different systems that predicting actual usage of the building is hard to do. The challenge is refining a modeling of building so it would be accurate and keep up with changes in codes. Still, Beattie says its an exciting time in construction because everything is energy-drive, which only leads to more innovation. Ten years ago, no house wanted to be first to put something in, he says. But now manufacturers give tons of new product to the marketplace. Owners want to differentiate their building and dont want the same package. Its a chance for cutting edge. From a control standpoint you dont have to repeat cookie-cutter commodity designs. That makes it much more fun. Eric Butterman is an indepe ndent writer. We say that if you put something on a drawing you have a 50 percent chance of getting it installed, Beattie laughs. But if you can show it in 3D you can get it up to 8090 percent.Richard Beattie, MEC

How to Handle Busy Phones Working From Home

How to Handle Busy Phones Working From HomeHow to Handle Busy Phones Working From HomeIs your business phone ringing off the hook? If the calls are business-related and helping you to generate income, it may be a sign your business is growing faster than you can handle alone. But many small businesses now publish phone information on websites and blogs and end up being inundated with many calls that are just a waste of time. Running a successful business requires using the telephone to stay in touch with your customers, clients, and other important business contacts. If you find yourself on the phone all day and unable to get to other important tasks, here are some tips for helping you to better manage your telephone time. Its Still a Job If you were working outside the home, your employer would probably restrict or prohibit personal phone calls on company time. When you work from home, your works hours should be dedicated to work-related calls as much as possible. Being your own anfhrer should not be seen as a license to set low work standards for yourself. You need to treat self-employment as a job with real responsibilities and set ground rules necessary for your success. Tips to help you better manage your time spent on phone calls include Schedule Personal Calls, Not Business Calls Use work hours for making and taking work-related calls. Make personal calls for appointments on your lunch hour or as early in the day as possible.Avoid Social Calls During Work Hours Since you need to call most of your business contacts during normal business hours let your family and friends wait to hear from you until the weekend or after business hours. Youll be less stressed and more focused on who you are talking with than the next call you have to make. Get Organized Never jot phone call notes on scraps of paper Buy a phone message pad where you can record calls and keep your notes in one place. Notebook style pads with carbon copies are the best. They hold hundreds of messages in one place, and you can rip out pages and still have a carbon copy in the book.Do Not Answer Every Single Call You Get Voicemail is not one of the seven deadly sins. There is nothing wrong with letting calls go to voicemail if you are swamped. You can pick up messages after hours when things are less hectic. Take Advantage of High-Tech Call Management Features and Devices Use Caller ID A Must for Small Business Owners If you know who is calling you, it is easier to make decisions about whether or not you have time to take the call. It is a great way to screen personal calls, telemarketing calls, and even callers you just do not want to talk to.Register Your Home, Business, and Cell Phones with the National Do Not Call Registry Stop unwanted interruptions from telemarketers. Even if you have an unlisted number, unless you register with the Do Not Call list, phone solicitors can still legally call you. fraktion Unwanted Phone Calls Use Anonymous Call Rejection serv ices and devices to keep callers with their own blocked information from calling you. Most blocked incoming calls are from people you may not wish to speak with like telemarketersBlock Your Own Caller ID Information Using a caller ID block feature on business phones is legal unless you are actually soliciting or telemarketing your business. Blocking your own caller ID information can help keep your contact information off telemarketing lists. It is especially important if you make frequent calls to get quotes, collect pricing information, or make over-the-phone purchases.

Related Articles Around the Web Wells Fargo Company One of the biggest challenges in alfruchtwein all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzi ng an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent geschftsleben strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further suppor ted by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h 2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive vorkaufsrecht for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Sleeping with the TV might make you obese study

Sleeping with the TV might make you obese studySleeping with the TV might make you obese studyFalling asleep with the lights or television on not only wastes electricity, but its now been linked with obesity, according to a new study.New research published in JAMA International Medicine found that sleeping with artificial light at night was significantly associated with an increased risk or weight gain and specifically obesity. The study looked at nearly 44,000 healthy women ages 35 to 74 years across the US, who were asked about their sleeping habits like whether they slept with no light, a small nightlight, and light or a television coming from another room over a five-year period. The candidates were women who had no history of cancer and worked regular hours. The study found that women who slept with any type of light including a television were 17% more likely to gain 11 pounds or more over the course of five years.Turning off the light while sleeping may be a useful tool for red ucing a possibility of weight gain and becoming overweight or obese, said Dr. Yong-Moon fruchtmark Park, the studys lead author, via UPI.It also may disturb day-to-day variations of stress hormones and affect other metabolic processes in ways that contribute to weight gain.Park said using a small night lamp wasnt associated with weight gain but admitted sleeping with light or television on were. That could lead to more than obesity including poorer sleep which leads to sluggishness that inhibits exercise and can lead to bad eating choices.A lack of sleep has previously been linked to obesity. Other research has found that light exposure before bedtime has fiddled with melatonin levels. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Artificial Intelligence Camera Improves Sight in Autonomous Ve... Artificial Intelligence Camera Improves Sight in Autonomous Ve... Artificial Intelligence Camera Improves Sight in Autonomous VehiclesThe cameras used in todays autonomous vehicles are combined with computers to recognize objects and make smart driving decisions. But more strain is being placed on those computers, which lag behind the advances in camera vision, increased ruf entscheidung and sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms.Researchers at Stanford University believe their new AI camera could be a big leap forward in helping cars recognize and associate renommees faster. The key to this camera is an optical computer that can process and sort images as the light enters it, as reported in a paper recently published in Scientific Reports. For autonomous cars, that means faster image recognition and faster decision making, said Julie Chang, a Ph.D. student at Stanford and one of the researchers. The opto-elec trical system in the AI camera establishes a two-layer neural network that cuts down on the extra hoops required by conventional computers to pre-process, sort, and classify images. For You System Helps Self-driving Cars See in FogA new hybrid optical-electrical computer konzeptioned for image analysis could improve image processing in autonomous vehicles. Image Stanford UniversityOptical technology was used back in CD-ROMs to record data and is used today in telecommunications networks for high-speed data transfers. Stanfords AI camera does more with optics by using photons for computation, much like how electrons drive conventional computing. Optical computing has shown promise as a faster form of computing but hasnt fully developed yet.The AI camera has a customized optical transistor that in real time analyzes optical data from the camera light rays in this case and filters the images based on patterns. The optical computing is done through a combination of algorithms and pixel association to classify and label pixels. The AI camera identifies basic objects like signs, animals, cars and planes much faster and with less power than conventional computers, Chang said. Conventional computers would require cameras to transfer all image data to power hungry processing units like GPUs, which have to parse through every pixel to identify objects.Fewer processing cycles and light-speed preprocessing power makes the AI camera extremely effective, Chang said.Fewer processing cycles and light-speed preprocessing power makes the AI camera extremely effective.Julie Chang, postdoctoral researcher, Stanford UniversityBut the cameras optical computer is still limited in scope and doesnt have the computing power to help the camera learn. Its pattern-based processing capabilities are also limited. The AI camera requires a conventional computer to do the heavy lifting, like learning or providing context to a full scene that may have multiple objects. Conventional computers are also needed to create rich visual data sets for drones, autonomous cars and robots. It works with popular deep learning platforms like Googles Tensor and Facebooks Caffe. The AI camera can be classified as an effective edge device, which is becoming important in IoT. Edge devices like the AI camera cut out irrelevant data and help identify objects quicker, reducing the overall computing stress. Smart meters and other sensor devices are similarly gaining such decision-making capabilities that reduce the strain on central computers doing high-level analytics. One major challenge the researchers faced was for the AI camera to identify images in dark conditions. The team overcame that with the neural network design and adjusted mathematical models, Chang said.Still in its early development stages, the camera is far from commercialization. But the researchers believe they have created a better solution for such a critical application.Read More 3-D Printing Vet Terry Wohlers Sees Endless O pportunities Manufacturing, Biomed, Smart Cities Fuel IoT Sensor Market Robots Use Environmental Clues to Build Structures
